The Mills-Peninsula Medical Group (MPMG) physicians have a long history of leadership and collaboration to provide the best health care possible for our community. In 1978, several Mills and Peninsula physicians embarked on a radical new idea and helped create a provider owned HMO, the Bay Pacific Health Plan as the first HMO option other than Kaiser Permanente in our area. With the growing popularity of HMO plans, Family Medical Clinics of the Peninsula, a local primary care physician owned group, and MPMG predecessor, was one of several other managed care provider groups developed in the 1980's to provide services to the growing number of HMO plans in California. However, the subsequent proliferation of health plans and Independent Practice Associations (IPA) in San Mateo County led our community to believe that a more local model of health care would be the best way to meet the needs of our physicians and patients. This decision was later validated by the rapid changes of the late 1990s, that led to the closure of several medical groups in San Mateo County.
Following the September of 1993 recommendation of the Mills-Peninsula Commission on Integrated Healthcare, Mid-Peninsula Physicians Medical Group Inc. (MPPMG) merged with Family Medical Clinics of the Peninsula (FMC) to create The Mills-Peninsula Medical Group (MPMG). The goal was to restructure the two largest local organizations with strategies that would meet growing demands for quality health care in our community. Building upon the managed care experience of FMC, MPMG and FMC operations and staff were consolidated in October 1994, and a new physician-driven organization was created.
While continuing to focus its business model in central San Mateo County, MPMG has moved from a pure IPA network to an increasingly integrated medical group. With the collective support of its physicians, MPMG has developed and expanded its Primary Care / Extended Hours Clinic, Nurse Advice and Triage service, and multiple disease management programs. The development of an extensive clinical data warehouse and Information Technology (IT) infrastructure now supports sophisticated financial and medical decision support reports for the care of some 45,000 MPMG managed care patients. In 2005, with the acquisition of the NextGen® electronic medical record, MPMG added the availability of a comprehensive practice management system (scheduling, registration and billing) and electronic medical record (EMR) as an option for its physician members. MPMG is committed to the development of a clinically integrated system of care for all of our patients.
In an effort to continue to provide high quality healthcare to patients in the community the MPMG teamed up with Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) effective April 1, 2010. With the affiliation between MPMG and PAMF, management of the MPMG HMO contracts will transition over to the Mills-Peninsula Division of PAMF effective January 1, 2011.
