Healthwise® News Release:

BOISE, Idaho, May 23, 2007—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a possible safety issue with the drug Avandia (rosiglitazone). Avandia is used to treat type 2 diabetes.

A new study shows that people who take Avandia raise their chance of having a heart attack. They may also raise their chance of death from heart disease. This study was done by looking at the results of 42 studies.

Although more research is needed, the results of this study are important. They need to be considered when you decide which medicine to use for treating type 2 diabetes.

If you take Avandia, do not stop taking the medicine. Call your doctor to talk about which medicine is best for you.

For more information about Avandia, see the FDA safety alert at http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01636.html.
